A memory from the past

May 2014

It felt like an eternity before I finally finish my second year of Computer Engineering. Classes seemed to be in fast-forward, and next thing you know, the exams hit you hard. After spending a few weeks of hard-core studying, I have never felt so free. Outside was a hot and humid summer day. It was one of those days where it is too hot to lift your legs without breaking a sweat. So here, I am stuck at home with nothing to do.

I decided to watch some anime to pass the little time we have before the fall semester starts again. As I was scrolling through the top lists, a slice of life series caught my eye. Hyouka is a series about a lazy protagonist who joins a Classics club. His adventure begins when he meets the members of the club. They become good friends, and they have daily club activities after classes. Most of the time in the clubroom, they hang out and relax, but that is only one aspect of the club. During the school year, they go about investigating school mysteries that have been unsolved.

After watching the series, all of a sudden, a great idea came to mind. If these characters can have a great time in a club, it would be an excellent idea to start my own club as well! Who has time to study when you can have fun in doing activities that you like? I always wanted to create apps on mobile after playing games like Hill Climb Racing (NOTE: Do not play that game before studying. Next thing you know, the day is over. True story.)

Coming up with what to do with the club is easy. Now, creating a catchy club name was hard. It is the first thing someone sees before viewing the club lists and websites. It is like trying to come up with a cool character name in an RPG when you realize after two hours that the name was already taken. Luckily, our club name and activities were unique at York University. I wanted to make a name that has something to do with Android, Apple and Blackberry. AndroidApple… too long. Andple… sounds weird. AppDroid… doesn’t sound too bad. (Blackberry wasn’t included in the name, cause who uses that anyway.) App stands for Apple and Droid stands for Android. When you combine the two together, the name of our club is formed.

Now that the ideas were made, all I had to do was to get enough members to be interested. All of my friends were already stoked, so finding the rest of the members shouldn’t be too hard. Over the next few months and the start of the fall semester, our club started to receive new member requests, but we haven’t even displayed our club yet! I hope this club continues long after our present executive team members graduate. Continue to create apps and enjoy the AppDroid club!

tl;dr The club was inspired by an anime series Hyouka. The name AppDroid is a concatenation of Apple and Android. It was created as a hangout place and a place to create apps.
